Time-dependence of differential G-values of OH radicals in water under Ne ion radiolysis

The yields of OH radicals in water containing phenol have been investigated for several ten MeV/n C ion and Ne ion having the same LET value, as a function of the residual ion energy at the specific depth in water. In this study, beside such energy dependence, the dependence of reaction time of OH radical yield was examined by changing the concentration of phenol as solute. The defferential G'-values of OH radicals, those G-values per kinetic energy of ions increase with specific energy of Ne ions. The G'-value just after irradiation(1.5ns) is relatively high but become lower with reaction time to be the value (2.7) obtained for $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-rays. It suggests the diffusion behavior of OH radicals locally induced in water.

Measurements of deuteron-induced activation cross sections for vanadium, iron, nickel and tantalum in 14-40 MeV region

Measurements of deuteron-induced activation cross sections for IFMIF accelerator structural materials (vanadium, iron, nickel and tantalum) were performed. In this work, we have obtained the cross sections for $$^{51}$$V(d,x)$$^{49}$$Cr, $$^{nat}$$Fe(d,x)$$^{55,56}$$Co, $$^{nat}$$Ni(d,x)$$^{55}$$Co, $$^{60,61}$$Cu and $$^{181}$$Ta(d,x)$$^{178,180}$$Ta reactions in 14-40 MeV region. These cross sections will be compared with other experimental ones and calculated value.

Measurement of thickness of samples by STIM for PIXE analysis

The purpose of this study is to correct yields of characteristic X-ray in micro-PIXE analysis by using STIM and computer simulation. To compensate the reduction of X-ray yields, thickness of a sample must be taken accurately with spatial resolution of a few microns but it is difficult to measure them by micro-PIXE analysis. Therefore, we use STIM to investigate them. Furthermore, we developed a computer simulation code to correct the X-ray yields. To confirm validity of our code, ion exchange resins, which are similar to biological cells in size, were used as a test sample. There were some wrong distributions of sodium in micro-PIXE analysis of ion exchange resins. But, they could be corrected to some extent by using our code.

Artificial cloud generation experiment was performed using a huge vertical pit located in Kamaishi iron-copper mine to investigate the characteristics of cloud. The physical and chemical properties of individual cloud droplets were examined by microscopic analysis at Kyoto university and micro-PIXE analysis at TIARA. The process of growth of cloud was clarified based on the result on droplet size, its distribution, droplet number concentration, and the change in distribution of chlorine in droplet as the function of size.

A heavy-ion-pulse radiolysis technology was developed using a single-photon-counting system. In the system, the ion beam was injected a thin scintillator before irradiating the sample. The light emitted from the scintillator by the ion irradiation was used as analyzing source to detect the absorption of primary species in water. Measurement of time-dependent absorption of hydrated electrons in water was achieved using the system, which demonstrates the usefulness of this technique.

Single-turn extraction technique for the JAERI AVF cyclotron

A flat-top acceleration system using fifth-harmonic frequency for the JAERI AVF cyclotron was developed to minimize the energy spread of an ion beam mainly for microbeam formation with a spot size of 1 micron in diameter by focusing with a set of quadrupole magnets. A single-turn extraction is an indispensable condition to reduce the energy spread without significant beam loss by the flat-top acceleration. In order to save time for the single-turn extraction tuning over measuring time distribution of the beam bunch, a deflector probe has been developed to observe the turn separation and the radial beam width. In this paper, we report the single-turn extraction technique with the deflector probe. As a result of beam developments, the single-turn extraction can be achieved in one or two hours and radioactivity of the deflector electrode can be also reduced in the acceleration of a high energy proton beam.

Structure analysis of carbon cluster ion using coulomb explosion

Recently, we have gained interesting results on the interaction between a swift cluster ion and a solid in TIARA. For the elucidation of these interactions and the physical effects, it is very important to grasp the structure of the cluster. For this purpose, a measurement system based on Coulomb explosion imaging (ECI) for analyzing the structure of small carbon clusters has been developed. The ECI technique involves the foil-induced dissociation of a swift cluster by electron stripping. As our first step of the investigation on the carbon cluster structure, the preliminary experiment was carried out on the structure dependence on the average charge state of atoms that composed a cluster passing through a thin foil.The result shows the same tendency as a calculated theoretical value.

Use of GAF-film and PC-scanner for easy high-resolution measurement of ion beam fluence distribution

We examined a combination of Gaf-chromic film dosimeter HD-810 and an image scanner for a personal computer as two-dimensional densitometer which is cheap, easy to use and allows speedy measurement with high spatial resolution. Linearity of dose response was mesured with RGB component up to 500Gy. The cause of low uniformity in ion beam fluense distribution at the JAERI AVF cyclotron raster beam scanning system was clarified by this method, which was a very sharp concentration of fluence in a beam spot.
